Jakob Scroggins, a junior majoring in Materials Science and Engineering, was selected as a recipient of a Goldwater Scholarship. This scholarship provides funding for students pursuing research careers in natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering with the goal of ensuring well trained professionals in these fields in the U.S. Starting when he was a freshman at UTK, Jakob has been doing undergraduate research in Prof. David Harper’s lab at the CRC. He has been researching the characterization of lignin-derived, nanostructured carbon materials for energy storage and conversion. In 2022, Jakob was a co-author on a paper exploring environmental remediation using lignin-derived materials.
