Dr. Amanda May joined the CRC in February, 2023. She completed her B.S. degree in chemical sciences at Kansas State University in 2007. During her time there, she worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the organic chemistry lab of Dr. Stefan Kraft. From 2002-2006 she also worked as a summer intern at Bayer CropScience. In August 2007, Dr. May began her graduate work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in synthetic organic chemistry. However, after joining the interdisciplinary lab of Dr. Shawn Campagna, her focus shifted to combining synthetic interests with bioanalytical chemistry to study metabolic effects of quorum sensing molecules on marine microorganisms using liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, and she earned a chemical biology PhD in May 2013. Dr. May then completed a post-doctoral appointment in the biochemistry department at Vanderbilt University with Lawrence Marnett. After a short stint in a clinical lab, Dr. May returned to academics as a research associate at the University of Tennessee where she has held positions in both medically and environmentally focused labs. Recently, her research focus has been on using chemical tools, specifically mass spectrometry, to gain a better understanding of the remediation efforts of common contaminants in the environment.
